Being calm in the storm
Just one week ago, my children’s Great Grandfather turned 102 and he chose to take my immediate family out to lunch to celebrate. Yes. I’m impressed too. Still living on his own and caring for himself, we often ask what he believes is his secret is to a long life. He lists up to 5 or 6 things, but one key theme seems to prevail. As you may guess, he places a very high value on family and friendships. Additionally, however, despite the storms of life, he has a positivity that rides the roller coaster of life's challenges. At 102, he still has this same positivity and a cheerful outlook on life and is keenly looking towards his 103rd birthday.
In the story from Mark 4:35-38, Jesus and his disciples faced a terrifying storm while crossing the sea. Despite the chaos around them, Jesus remained calm and even slept peacefully amidst the raging tempest. This story teaches us valuable lessons about maintaining composure and finding peace amid life's storms.
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It's natural to feel fear, stress, or uncertainty when facing difficult situations. Acknowledge these emotions without judgment. Understand that it's okay to feel overwhelmed, but don't let those feelings control your actions or mindset. Try talking to God and praying for his help and guidance.
2. Just as Jesus trusted in God's protection during the storm, find comfort through prayer, positive and uplifting music and by simply trusting that God will look after you and be a very present help in time of trouble.
3. Focus on What You Can Control: In the midst of a storm, it's easy to feel powerless. Instead of dwelling on things beyond your control, focus on what you can do to navigate through the situation. Take practical steps, make decisions based on the information available, and trust in your abilities to overcome obstacles.
4. Surround Yourself with Support: Like my Great Grandfather who celebrated his 102nd birthday with his family, surround yourself with supportive relationships. Lean on loved ones for encouragement, guidance, and reassurance during difficult times. Having a strong support system can help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide a sense of belonging.
5. Maintain a Positive Outlook: Choose to see challenges as opportunities for growth and resilience. Just as my Great Grandfather maintained a positive attitude despite life's storms, cultivate optimism and gratitude in your own life. Look for silver linings, focus on the good in circumstances, and believe in your ability to weather any storm that comes your way.
6. Be the Calm in Someone Else's Storm: Finally, strive to be a source of calm and reassurance for others during their times of need. Just as Jesus brought peace to his disciples amidst the storm, offer kindness, empathy, and support to those around you. Your presence and encouragement can make a significant difference in someone else's journey through the storm.
In life, storms are inevitable. Remember, it's not about avoiding the storms, but learning to dance in the rain.
