Performing Arts at Carrum Downs

Performing Arts is an intrinsic part of school life at Carrum Downs. From Musicals, Concerts and Chapel items to Drama classes and House Competitions, Performing Arts support learning outcomes across a variety of subjects, aides well being and mental health and provides many creative outlets for both staff and students.

A variety of Performing Arts competitions are hosted throughout the year, including Dance, Battle of the Bands and our very popular "Flinders Got Talent".

We also run Performing Arts Workshops in the School Holidays that aim to help students develop theatre craft, musicality, movement and presentation skills.

Performing Arts Lessons

At Flinders Carrum Downs, we offer Dance, Musical Theatre, Speech and Drama lessons for students from Grade Prep to Year 12 as part of our Performing Arts Program. These lessons are offered by our Performing Arts staff, who also Produce and Choregraph the Primary and Secondary Musical Productions each year.

School Productions

Each year, students from Grades 3 to Year 12 have the opportunity to audition for roles in our school musicals. In addition to our much loved annual School Production for students in Grades 5 - 12, we now have an annual Primary School Production involving all students from Prep to Grade 6.

Unique in it's approach, our "Whole Primary" Production consists of an auditioned cast of Grades 3 - 6 Students, together with each Grade performing in a song or scene from the chosen Musical. The success of the format has been a wonderful, inclusive and fun way to bring our families together for a "One Night Only" performance.

Over the years, our School Productions have enabled a significant number of students to display and develop their talents, as well as building community and connection between staff and students across the College.

Our choice of production aims to stimulate theatre and stagecraft awareness both on stage and backstage, as well as being challenging enough to enthuse students and extend their capacities.

Some of our recent productions at Carrum Downs have included The Sound of Music, The Lion King Kids, We Will Rock You - Young at Part, Shrek Junior, Annie Junior, Legally Blonde Junior, and Oliver!

2023 - Aladdin Kids

The Sound of Music - 2023

There is so much to love about The Sound of Music, from its well-known songs such as "My Favourite Things" and "Do Re Mi," to the inspirational story of Maria Rainer, a young novice who is sent by her convent in 1930s Austria to become a governess to the seven children of a widowed naval officer. As the story unfolds, we see Maria transform from a naïve, carefree young woman, to a mature, gentle and loving mother and wife. We also see the change Maria inspires in those around her, to become the best version of themselves.

The Lion King Kids - 2022

Our 2022 Primary School Production was definitely a crowd favourite. Along with a Main Cast of forty plus Grades 3 - 6 students, each year level performed a song from the production, making for an amazing one hour show! With only one performance, our School Gymnasium was packed with close on eight hundred staff, students and family members. Truly a night to remember!

Tuck Everlasting - 2018

In 2018 our Carrum Downs Campus presented Tuck Everlasting, a musical based upon the American children's novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. It features music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and a book by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle.

Cinderella – 2017

Our 2017 school production was Cinderella. Created by Rogers and Hammerstein who wrote some of the most iconic musicals of all time, this show was a magical trip into a world of princes and princesses, royal balls, adventure, godmothers with special powers, glass slippers, and maybe even a happy ending.
