As we wrap up an exciting and eventful Term 1, it's a perfect time to reflect on the amazing achievements, activities, and experiences that have made this term so special. From engaging classroom lessons to fun extracurricular activities, our students have shown tremendous dedication and enthusiasm. But beyond academics, it's also a time to celebrate the spirit of community and growth that defines our school.

This first term has been a busy one, with students diving into their studies, exploring new ideas, and expanding their skills. Whether it’s through creative projects, group collaborations, or individual learning, each student has contributed something unique to the classroom environment. Teachers have been incredibly proud of the hard work and commitment shown by all.

As we approach the Easter break, we are reminded of the deeper meanings that this season holds. Easter is a time for reflection, renewal, and hope. In many ways, it’s a perfect opportunity for students and staff alike to rest, recharge, and look forward to the next chapter of the school year.

Easter is a message of hope and resurrection, symbolizing new beginnings and the chance to start fresh. It encourages us to embrace challenges with optimism, knowing that, like the spring flowers that bloom after the cold winter months, growth and renewal are always possible.

This Easter, we invite everyone to take some time for personal reflection, to appreciate the beauty of the world around us, and to look forward with hope. Whether through spending time with family, engaging in community activities, or simply resting, we hope all our students and their families find peace and joy in this special season.

As we embrace this season of renewal and reflection, I’d like to share a verse that reminds us of the hope and new beginnings Easter represents:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

This verse speaks to the heart of the Easter message—hope, transformation, and the promise of a fresh start. Just as Easter celebrates the resurrection and the new life it brings, so too does this verse remind us that every day is an opportunity for renewal. As we step into the next term, may we embrace the new possibilities before us, with faith, hope, and an open heart.

As we head into the Easter holidays, let's take a moment to appreciate the hard work and positive energy that everyone has contributed to making Term 1 so memorable. We are excited about the rest of the school year and can’t wait to see all the wonderful things our students will continue to achieve.

We have many unclaimed and unnamed uniform items in Lost Property, including blazers and soft-shell jackets. Please come to Student Health and check the cupboard.

We pick up many uniform items that are left in the playground. If they are named, they are returned to the student but if the item is not named there is nothing we can do.

Any items not claimed by the end of the 2nd week in Term 2 will be given to P&F to sell as 2nd hand uniform items.

The current road detours will remain in place until late April

From Monday 24 March until late April, Greenwood Drive at the Ballarto Road intersection will be open, and Ballarto Road will be reduced to one lane between Greenwood Drive and Flora Park Way (westbound traffic only).

This means that Flinders traffic exiting the school will be able to turn left and right. However, traffic turning right will be detoured down Greenwood Drive.

We have had an action filled term 1 with excellent learning opportunities in classrooms, incursions, excursions, carnivals, Grandparent’s Day, NAPLAN, stay lates and camps!

We hope and pray the Easter celebration is a wonderful time with family and friends. Term 2 for students starts on Wednesday 23 April. There will be a two week change over where students can wear either summer or winter uniform, but not a combination of both. From week 3, full winter uniform is required. If students are getting haircuts, please keep in mind our school policy HERE which details neatness and extreme styles.

As we head into the holidays, Chapter 5 of the ‘Collapse of Parenting’ book aptly discusses SCREENS. Leonard Sax (MD, PhD) mirrors the thoughts of Jonathan Heidt (author of the ‘Anxious Generation’) outlining the perils of too much screen time for our youth.

One study tracks young children and their access to smart devices. The more use a child had, the more irritable and emotionally hyperactive they became. The authors of the study concluded that when children are stressed and parents put a screen in front of them, kids are not learning how to deal with stress, they are simply distracted by the screen. Another study found the more screen time a child experienced early in life, the more likely they were to be developmentally delayed.

Sax further outlines the many perils of too much unfiltered screen time. He recommends:

No devices in the bedroom.
No devices at the dinner table.
No social media for those under 18.
No explicit material.
Strict limits on video games.

Kids need to be grounded in the real world, not the world of screens. For the research and detail behind these claims, I recommend reading the ‘Collapse of Parenting’, the Anxious Generation or both (2024 updated editions)!

Last week, our Grade 6 students undertook an educational tour of our national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.

The students explored significant landmarks, including the War Memorial, Parliament House, the Australian Mint, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Government House, and the Electoral Education Centre. They also visited two favourites, Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport. It was an action-packed four-day adventure.

The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Broadway in a Week & Gateway Theatre Company will be presenting Seussical Kids during the school holidays at the Gateway Performing Arts Centre, Seaford.

What a busy Term 1 we have had in Waymaker!

Students have been busy learning new skills and facing the classroom head on! Our term started with a study of Belonging and Community before moving into an exploration of Board Games and wrapping it all up with the Easter story. Students have been working hard in Health, Humanities, English, Mathematics, Art and Science and completing some wonderful Passion Projects, drawing on their personal strengths, skills and character traits. Highlights of the term included the Cuthbert Carnival and our visit to a local animal sanctuary to learn about native animals. Next term we look forward to learning about the ANZACs, what it means to Believe and challenging ourselves in our Escape Room unit.

Congratulations to the wonderful 6 secondary dancers who represented our school (alongside their musical and choral peers) at the SIS Big Night Concert on Tuesday 1 April at The Drum Theatre. Special congratulations to our year 12 Hip Hop choreographer, Abbey Bartlett, and our soloist VCE VET Dancer, Jazlyn Hoy. It was a joy to watch you showcase your craft - thank you for sharing!

Wakakirri is Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools, and we are delighted to announce that Secondary Students are invited to participate in our schools entry this year! A date between August 11-14 will be set once we have cast our entry, and the performance of our entry will be at Frankston Arts Centre.

Keep an eye and an ear out for more information IN TERM 2 (and info session on Tuesday 29 April at lunch in D Block) or speak to Performing Arts Captain Eden Vass, who with Jazlyn Hoy, will be our Wakakirri 2025 Choreographers.

Wakakirri is a nationwide Festival for Australian schools that provides a platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and aspirations through the art of storytelling and dance. Inspired by the belief that great stories can inspire change, Wakakirri is designed to promote student engagement and well-being in schools through the creation and performance of captivating Story-Dances.​ To learn more about Wakakirri go HERE

This week we were very excited to announce ‘Finding Nemo Kids’ as our Primary Production for 2025! The children were very excited, with almost 70 students attending our lunchtime information session. Our Performance date is the 28th August 2025, and we look forward to beginning the audition and rehearsal process in Term 2.

U15 Australian Beach Volleyball Championships

We are incredibly proud to announce that Zol recently competed at the U15 Australian Beach Volleyball Championships, representing Victoria! Zol was part of a team that showcased exceptional skill at this prestigious event, which was held on the Gold Coast. This remarkable achievement highlights Zol’s dedication and talent in his sport, and we are thrilled to see him excel on the national stage.

Over the past two weeks, Flinders College has been proudly represented by numerous teams at the 3X Cup Qualifying Days at Frankston Stadium.

In the U20 division, we had two teams—one female and one male. Both teams delivered outstanding performances, with the U20 Girls securing 1st place and the U20 Boys finishing as runners-up. Their success has earned them a well-deserved spot in the U20’s 3X Finals.

In the U17 division, Flinders was represented by two teams in the boys division and one team in the girls division. All teams performed exceptionally well, with all three making it to the Grand Final. The U17 girls fought hard and came away with a silver medal whilst both Flinders boys' teams played each other in the grand final.

In the U15 division, Flinders was represented by two boys’ and two girls' teams. Both girls’ teams performed exceptionally well in Division 1, meeting each other in the grand final. Meanwhile, our boys’ teams also found success with our Division 1 boys winning their grand final, while our Division 2 boys finished as runners-up.

Congratulations to all teams on their incredible achievements, and we wish them the best of luck in the finals next term!

On Tuesday, 11 March, students from our Carrum Downs and Tyabb campuses travelled to the Christian Schools Events Network (CSEN) Basketball Championships to compete against some of the top Christian schools in the region.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for our teams to showcase their skills, teamwork, and dedication while representing Flinders.

Our teams performed strongly across various divisions:

Senior Boys – Carrum Downs finished 7th, and Tyabb placed 8th

Senior Girls – Tyabb finished 4th, and Carrum Downs placed 7th

Junior Boys – Tyabb finished 10th and Carrum Downs finished 12th

Junior Girls – Carrum Downs finished 3rd and Tyabb finished 4th

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Term 1 SIS Weekly Sport season! We are incredibly proud of all our teams for their hard work and determination throughout the competition.

A special congratulations to our Division A teams and pennant winners for their outstanding achievements.

Our Senior Girls Basketball and Intermediate Girls Handball teams both remained undefeated throughout the season, progressing to the Division 1 finals. Our Intermediate Girls finished as runners-up, while our Senior Girls claimed victory in their division.

Another fantastic achievement goes to our Intermediate Boys Netball team, who went undefeated all season and secured the Intermediate Boys Netball Pennant.

Well done to all teams for an amazing season—we look forward to more success in Term 2!

On Monday, 24 March, selected swimmers from House Swimming and Swim Intensive represented Flinders College at the SIS Relay Carnival, held at Pines Pool. Competing against other schools in the association, our swimmers showcased their talent, determination, and teamwork.

Flinders came away with great success, with numerous students earning ribbons for their outstanding performances. This event was a valuable opportunity to finalise relay teams for the upcoming SIS Division A Swimming Carnival, refine race strategies, and perfect changeovers.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on their fantastic efforts—we look forward to seeing them in action at SIS Division A Swimming in Term 2!

On Tuesday, 11 March, at the Pines Pool, we held our Swim Intensive Training session in preparation for our upcoming SIS Division A Swimming Carnival and Swim Carnival Relay. With beautiful weather for the morning, our swimmers focused on refining their technique, improving relay changeovers, and building endurance. They also had the opportunity to set new stroke times, making great progress in both individual and team performance.

A huge thank you to our swim coaches, Alex and Lochie, for facilitating an amazing session and providing valuable guidance to our students.
